Odra – part of Wroclaw culture

About Odra

To try and imagine Wroclaw without the Odra is tantamount to thinking of Giza without its pyramids. The city is defined by this great sprawling river with its numerous tributaries and canals, as well as by the 12 islands and over 120 bridges that cross it – all of which bring so much life, character and charm to the Lower Silesian capital. With so many waterways and spans it is little wonder that Wroclaw has been dubbed as the ‘Venice of Poland’ – although new visitors to the city can take this with a pinch of salt and leave their canoes at home. River Odra – part of Wroclaw culture.

The Odra was known to the Romans as Viadrus or Viadua, and was first referred to as the Odera around 990, when it was documented as the western boundary of early Poland under duke Mieszko I. Over the centuries the river gained more and more importance to Wroclaw, both as part of the trading routes that linked Russia, Germany and Bavaria together (and as such made Polish merchants very wealthy!), and also as a source of life and energy.

Today Wroclaw has two ports on the Odra and the river continues to play a part in its burgeoning trade economy, forming one of the city’s many great transport links.

The Odra is the second longest river in Poland, after the Vistula, covering 742km in Poland and 112km in the Czech Republic, from where it originates in the Oder Mountains. As it nears the Baltic Sea 187km of its length defines the modern day Polish-German border.

Jazz on the Odra

Jazz on the Odra, one of the oldest jazz festivals in Poland.

The Jazz Personality Contest is an inseparable part of the festival, and one of its hallmarks. The oldest and the most prestigious jazz competition in Poland is open for instrumentalists and singers, who at the time of the festival are 35 or younger. The 2018 Grand Prix – Jazz Personality laureate will receive a prize of 25 000 PLN sponsored by the Mayor of Wrocław; the Jury will also distinguish the best soloist, band and composer. From the very first years of the contest’s existence, it featured great musicians and stars of Polish jazz, including Włodzimierz Nahorny, Zbigniew Seifert, Ewa Bem, Krzesimir Dębski, Janusz Strobel, Henryk Miśkiewicz, Tomasz Szukalski and Andrzej Zaucha. Last year, the Grand Prix was won by Adam Jarzmik Quintet.

Nowadays many people want to take care of their health and condition properly. However, it is not as easy as it may seem. It’s hard to change your lifestyle to a healthier and better one, but the easiest way to begin is to start jogging.

Running is the easiest, most natural form of activity, which can positively affect our health. It gives the quickest results and what’s important it doesn’t cost much. Thanks to jogging you will reduce the risk of heart and cardiovascular diseases, lose weight, shape your figure, but also improve the intelligence and the look of your skin.

People who run regularly, less often get sick, are less likely to succumb to colds and infections, but if they do, they process them mildly, especially when they run outside in the fresh air, regardless of the weather. Regular running immunizes the body, tempers it and increases tolerance to rapid changes in atmospheric pressure. Thanks to this, the susceptibility to depression and malaise, caused by changes in the weather, is reduced. Running slows down aging processes and enables you to gain a youthful figure and efficiency. As shown by numerous tests, jogging since young age ,makes our bodies biologically younger than our peers’ who don’t make any sport, by 10-17 years, because biological age does not always coincide with a metric one.

People who start their running adventure can be divided into three groups.
1. People who want to lose weight and improve their physical condition.
2. People for whom jogging becomes a lifestyle.
3. Third group consists of people who have sports ambitions and a desire to compete in street running

What gives regular running?
1. Increases endurance
2. Oxygen the brain
3. Teaches time management
4. It makes pattern to follow
5. Provide a premium in the form of a extended life
6. Counteracts depression

Where can you run in Wroclaw?
• West Park – section about 1900m, most of the gravel route
• East Park – 2900m of a picturesque gravel road with sections over the Oława river
• Kleciński Park – a loop about 1500 m long with paved alleys, a few gentle runs and fugitives,

Free walking tour – no boring tour guides

The idea of Free Walking Tour  has been around for a while, but started to be more popular nowadays. It’s a relatively new way to discover Wroclaw compared to the traditional tour concept.

A Misconception about Free Walking Tours

The word ‘free’ has obvious appeal to budget-conscious travellers but it’s also a word that can ring alarm bells.

Here’s a piece of advice from an experienced tour guide who did many FREE tours: A good FREE walking TOUR is interesting and useful even for locals, because a good FREE walking TOUR guide spends a lot time exploring the city, he knows hidden spots and places to show and speak about, so a tour will be surprising both for visitors and travelers and locals as well.

Plus there is nothing to lose apart from the calories you’ll burn with walking. FREE walking TOURs can`t be boring because their based only on donations!

Free walking tour available in several languages: English, German and Polish. There are also paid tours: CRAFT BEERS OF WROCLAW, FOODS OF WROCLAW – PRIVATE TOUR, CENTENNIAL HALL PRIVATE TOUR, OLD JEWISH CEMETERY PRIVATE TOUR, STREET ART TOUR.

Urban jungle in the city

Urban jungle in the city

How to create your own urban jungle in Wroclaw?

Urban jungle in the city
Urban jungle

There’s no better way to bring freshness and harmony into your life than to surround yourself with plants. Creating your own urban jungle in the city is not that difficult as you think.

Urban jungle and the love for plants seem to be everywhere lately. It is a huge trend in the interiors and design.  Tired of the cold and monochrome spaces, people prefer to be surrounded by the cosy and calm colours and shapes of the plants. There is a huge connection between love for plants and clean living and digital detoxing.

And indoor plants keep us reconnected to the nature. They have significant impact both on our physical and mental well being. They purify the air from toxins and release the oxygen back. Most of all they improve our sleep, decrease stress and anxiety levels and improve our cognitive performance.

Plants help us pursue a healthier and better lifestyle. While taking care of them we learn how to be patient again. In the world of instant gratification, plants make us slow down and wait for the result.

Creating your own urban jungle in the city is rather not difficult, but below are some helpful place that will get you started in Wroclaw.

Projekt Rośliny is a shop located on Kluczborska 3 Street. Two friends created this place out of their love for plants. They offer the advise on which plants to choose and what’s more how to take care of them. Their love and passion for plants is visible on each page of the book they wrote together, also called Projekt Rośliny.

Akademia Miejskiego Ogrodnika is a series of meetings and workshops held in Barbara on Świdnicka 8B Street. Each meeting consists of theoretical lecture about a chosen subject, connected with plants and also a practical workshop, where participants can check their knowledge in practice. What is even more useful, participants can share plants, seedlings and seeds between each other. Meetings are free of charge.

Last recommended place is Natura Rzeczy. It is a shop and a gallery filled with beautiful objects and plants.  Place promotes polish designers and organizes workshops that help participants discover their inner creativity and helps them find their inner peace.  One of the workshop teaches how to create our own forest in the jar.

It’s difficult only until you try it, so go on and create your own urban jungle in the city. Good luck!

Hala Targowa Wroclaw shopping center

Hala Targowa is a traditional a place of trade and meetings of residents.

A traditional place for shopping Hala Targowa (Wroclaw) – designed by Richard Plüddemann and Heinrich Küster.

Hala Targowa was built in 1908 and it is a valuable engineering monument. The design was very modern, the construction was supported on reinforced concrete arches, what gave the building a high durability. The external elevation is partly made of bricks, whereas from the south it is plastered. The window frames were made of steel. The building has two towers and a clock. The building has 4 floors, the most important is the main hall and the gallery surrounding it. In the cellars there are freezers and butchers’ rooms where there is quartered the meat. The hall towers are unfortunately not available for tourists. Many architectural elements of the Hala Targowa have been written in the list of the monuments. Starting from the main portals made of sandstone in the art nouveau style, through bas-reliefs, urban coat of arms, clocks. Ending with balustrades, stairs and even crates of meat stands also made in the art nouveau style.

Now Hala Targowa is a traditional a place of trade and meetings of residents.

After entering the main hall on the left side, you can find a few very large stands with fruits and vegetables, on the right there are meat, bakeries and dairy products. There are several stands with traditional products from Spain and Portugal. You can buy not only regional products but also high quality Spanish hams or feta cheese. You can buy here bread baked on natural sourdough, spelt buns, soy mingers, cold pressed oils, herbs and spices, birch juice. In the further part there are many stands with flowers and floristic accessories. There is a cash machine at the entrance, but for the majority of stands there is a possibility you to pay by a card. Apart from shopping, there are a few cheap bars and cafes in the hall, and a restaurant with  a craft beer in front of the entrance. In the hall gallery there are stands with chemical and household articles. In front of the building there is a tram stop (lines 8,7,17,9,23) next to it there are a few parking places, however, it is the best to walk on this part of the city.

Jazz Clubs in Wroclaw

incognito

If you like Jazz, you can spend time in some cool places in Wroclaw. There is a fantastic atmosphere there with fantastic sounds and an unusual atmosphere.
Below are a few suggestions where every fan of such climates will find something for themselves including live concerts.

Vertigo Jazz Club & Restaurant

vertigo

Vertigo Jazz Club & Restaurant is the home of music. A place where her fans feel at home. The club – the only one in Wroclaw and the whole region, elegant, cozy and open to everyone – has been prepared with care and attention to every detail. Vertigo Jazz is associated with what is best in Jazz, in art and in life. The concerts and exhibitions organized under the club’s name serve this purpose.

Incognito Cocktail Bar

incognito

Speakeasy (hidden in a restaurant) hidden in the Bistro Garage. Premises Offers a private atmosphere and professional bartending and waiter service. A great place to meet in a narrow circle of friends and spend time in a cozy atmosphere.

Collosseum Jazz Caffe

collosseum

Collosseum Jazz Caffe in Wroclaw is one of the few (if not the only) place called the Jazz club. Currently, there are two levels in the club, on one there is a balloon room, and on the other there is a concert hall. A great place to relax even during the week, because you can drink hot tea, or coffee and listen to good live music, Jam Session is often organized here. If we do not have the opportunity to bring our equipment, it is already in the club seeded and waiting for someone who will show what he can do.

Music Club LIVERPOOL

liverpool

The place departs from Jazz climates but it is worth recommending. The club is located in the basement of a historic building, so it has its own natural decor and atmosphere, good acoustics and strong sound system. In Wrocław, the club has made a place for people who like strong sounds, but it also does not shy away from calmer events presenting music for connoisseurs, for example evenings with blues-rock, progressive and art-rock music, as well as jazz or funk. Liverpool became known in Poland from the organization of the gathering of fans – there were all-Poland The Cure, Depeche Mode, U2 and Rammstein gold rallies, which attracted crowds of fans from all over Poland.

Shooting ranges in Wroclaw

Hello, all newcomers from abroad,
If you come from a country where the law is more liberal and you can have a weapon without problems or simply you are passionate about shooting, it’s not lost. The fact that you are in a country where possession of a weapon by a civilian is prohibited by law does not mean that you can’t continue your passion. You can always use professional shooting ranges, which are many in Lower Silesia and the whole country. We will focus on the area of Wroclaw. We have several professional shooting ranges at our disposal, where under the supervision of an instructor you can use the arsenal of the shooting range and practice your shooting skills. Some of the shooting ranges, unfortunately, belong to their club and you can’t come literally from the street to be able to train for entertainment. But there are at least two shooting ranges worth recommending, where you can freely come, pay and use their shooting tracks. A big plus is that both are located practically in the city center, which solves the problem of transport.

„WAR-ZONE & LASER TAG”

The first of the proposed shooting ranges is “War-Zone & Laser Tag” and is located at ul. Sztabowa 32 in an old post-German bunker in the military area. As the name suggests, the shooting range consists of two areas. The first area is a laser-tag arena. It is the only two-story labyrinth in Wroclaw, where you can create a track yourself with moving obstacles and curtains. The labyrinth consists of tires, doors, barrels, stairs, ladders and mysterious passages. All moving obstacles can be freely moved. Many corridors and lanes make the game even more interesting. The old walls of the German military shelter with a floating smokescreen and properly selected music create an unforgettable, dark atmosphere. At the same time, up to 8 players can currently be in the labyrinth. You can arrange integration and occasional parties and birthdays for children there.

The second separate area is a typical shooting range, where you can shoot with firearms under the supervision of instructors. We have many short and long weapons units at our disposal. Starting from the latest pistols and rifles used today in all units, through weapons used during World War II, ending with various pistols, revolvers and historical shotguns. In addition to the availability of individual weapons, you can order thematic weapon packages, for example “World War 2”, “ladies’ weapons”, “made in Israel”, “made in Russia”, “Police package”, “US Army” and many more. The prices depend on the type of weapon and the amount of ammunition purchased. For example, for PLN 100, we have a fee for entering the shooting range PLN 20-25 and three pistols for each 10 shots or 20 shots from the AK-47. More details can be found at www.war-zone.com.pl.

PROGUN

Another shooting range worth visiting is “ProGun”, which is located in the basement of the Świebodzki Railway Station at Plac Orląt Lwowskich 20B. The entrance is located under the northern wing of the Świebodzki Station from the side of Robotnicza Street.
A common passion and many years of collecting firearms by the owners of the shooting range meant that we have at our disposal a wide range of weapons used by the world’s largest armies.

Shooting packs available in ProGun will allow you to familiarize yourself with the capabilities of the most popular weapon models, and the safety of each participant is supervised by an experienced instructor.

The price of the package is the entire service:
– discussion of the operation of the weapon
– rules for safe handling
– discussing the attitudes of shooting
– the most important elements in customs shooting
– shields, stickers

Package prices start from PLN 100 for the simplest one, up to PLN 300 for the richest one. Of course, by prior arrangement, you can compose your own package from a very large list of weapons. In addition to the price should be added 25 PLN for entering the object. Details of the offer can be found at www.progun.pl.
To use both shooting ranges, you must make an appointment by phone or e-mail. Both shooting ranges are open throughout the week, except Monday for War-Zone. I invite all enthusiasts to have fun!
