Food sharing in Wroclaw

Food sharing

Tons of food goes to the trash! What to do to avoid a huge waste of food? Food sharing is one of the answers!

Data shows that about 9 million tons of food is wasted annually in Poland. The value of this food is probably about PLN 50 for each Pole every month. 35% of the food go for disposal. That’s why we should try food sharing.

Sharing is a new trend.
Economics based on sharing is a relatively new trend in the economy and society. It involves the direct exchange of goods and services between consumers who mainly communicate via special websites or social media. With the help of this term, the entire spectrum of online businesses have the potential to revolutionize the global market for the exchange of goods and services. Also it can be both non-profit and profitable. However is about exchanging between one man and another. In this Expats in Wroclaw article. I want to focused on NON PROFIT form.

How does it starts?
The first Food Sharing point was opened in May 2016 in Warsaw. Therefore Torun, Cracow, Wroclaw and Poznan followed the idea. Other cities followed them consequently. Social refrigerators in Wroclaw are mostly grow due to the idea of the group WeźPomóż.pl, which promotes the idea of sharing food in Lower Silesia. Anyone who wants can bring food to the fridge. Food will be available in the fridge for those in need. Food sharing points are for everyone – the material status of people who visit it is not checked here. The whole system finally works freely.

What can you put in a shared fridge?
The basic rule: bring what you would eat by yourself.  Home products such as cake or soup must be packed in disposable, sealed containers with the exact date of preparation and description on packaging. Furthermore you can put dry products on special shelf.

What can you not bring?
Products that contain raw meat, raw eggs, unpainted milk products (unless they are vacuum-packed and have a valid shelf-life) can not be accepted; open canned food or jars with preserves; products that have exceeded the shelf-life date; products with signs of breakage. The rules for products are posted on the front door of the refrigerator too.

Volunteers, companies and food rescuers
All sharing food points function because of volunteers. They are usually young people who, using social media – mainly Facebook – are trying to buy refrigerators, shelves, social signs and also make sure that the place is working properly. In addition volunteers check in this points cleanliness standards, wash it, if there’s a need, bring food or throw out expired products.

Plants in Wroclaw – Tour around Wroclaw for plants enthusiassts

plants in Wroclaw

If you’re a fan of plants I invite you for non-obvious trip.
There is nothing more inseparable from humanity than nature. Nowadays, plants are becoming a very strong trend in fashion and indoor design; but today I want to pull you out of couch and make you go outside. I’d like to show you some places in Wroclav, where you can admire different kinds of plants.

Botanical Garden
First point on our tour map is Botanical Garden with Green House inside. The object is open between 2nd of April and 12th of November. During a few months, we can observe plants and flowers daily. And a ticket for student cost 10 PLN. Garden is located near well-known, historical Ostrów Tumski.

In Wroclav’s Garden you can admire cacti and other succulents in a historic Cactus House, as well as in two greenhouses where succulents of Africa and of Mexico are presented. Under the greenhouse’s roofs there is an impressive collection of exotic plants originating from warmer climatic zones. This is the best place to make “tropical” photos and breathe fresh air in the middle of the city.

Flower Shop

Leaving the Garden, we go to the newly opened place on the map of Wroclav. rośliny.  is a modern and minimalistic store. Here, the plants are in the spotlight. We can gain knowledge of how to take care about different types of plants and buy a beautiful seedling, too. I also recomand  you to find them on Instagram. They’re amazing.

Maze at Brochów
The last stop on the track is the Labyrinth at Wroclaw Brochów. The labyrinth that you will find in the park, today is a hornbeam labyrinth designed in the 1990s as part of a revitalization project. A walk through the maze is a game; it might give you some adrenalin. Having a long walk in the tunnel, after another turn you may come across a wall and have to turn back.

I hope you will enjoy my tips for spending your “green” day in Wroclaw!

Living as a student in Wroclaw

Sunset in Wroclaw

Living as a student in Wroclaw

Firstly, the aim of the video is showing how the student life is in Wroclaw and meanwhile making introduction film about Wroclaw in a most natural way. You can see how it would be living as a student in Wroclaw. As you can see the camera is the first person. It feels like you are the guy in the movie and seeing all the things through his eyes.

After he wakes up, he washes his face, makes a coffee wears clothes. But the important thing starts with these daily activities. He opens the door and boom; we see the Rynek, people are happy and riding a bicycle, then he goes to tram station and by that he introduces the transportation system in Wroclaw to us then we see the boat tour, some buildings and finally he walks into the school. We see the friendship, foods, people are helping him and stairs for blind people.

All these things emphasize that Wroclaw is a great city for living as a student. And, I think, it’s a very clever way to show it rather than regular introduction movie but it could be better if the video was more long.

Wroclaw for expats – inspirations and lifestyle

Wroclaw for expats

Wroclaw for expats is very interesting city with a lot of opportunities.  Each of us is the creator of our life and Wrocław is a great place to start

Hi! My name is Ivanna, I am 21 and I want to tell you where I have found my inspiration. As everyone has understood from the title of my blog, I live in Wroclaw. I want to tell you about Wroclaw for expats – the best place I ever found abroad.

  • Wroclaw is the largest city in western Poland.
  • The population of the city is more than 600.000 .

There are a lot of foreigners and students from all over the world. It is a university city with many well-known universities such as the University of Wroclaw, the Wroclaw University of Technology and other famous institutions, all of which enjoy an enviable reputation in Poland and abroad.

This is my 5th year here. And you know, I am not bored at all. Wroclaw has a great history. The history of the city dates back a thousand years, and combines almost all religions and cultures of Europe. At various times, it has been part of:

  • Poland,
  • Bohemia,
  • Prussia,
  • Germany.

It became part of Poland in 1945 as a result of the border changes after the Second World War. The city is new and old at the same time. This place is an alive history, which u can touch and feel.

Wroclaw for expats – just try!

The next question, which has already existed in your mind is :”What she’s doing in this city?”. I came here when I was 17 to get higher education. So I am a student, and i am from Ukraine. The first problem which all expats met abroad is language barier. For me it also was a problem to speak polish, but Wrocław for expats is an friendly city where many people speak different languages and are very helpful. So during 1 year in Wrocław I have learned polish. More information about how to learn polish for expats I am going to tell you in my next text.

In 2016 i have graduated Wroclaw School of Banking(WSB) and got B.A. of political science. And these student years run as fast as a mouse from a hungry cat. So in 2017 I have entered the University of Lower Silesia (DSW) to become M.A. and to enjoy my student life next 2 years. Now mouse is far from cat, at least for 2 years. I like to be a student, to meet new people, to learn something new. And I like to be a student in Wroclaw. Why? Because Wroclaw for expats is best. When i have got my bachelor degree i was feeling lost. I didn’t know what to do in my life. I even was thinking about moving from Wroclaw. But this city hasn’t let me go. I am thankful for that. Wroclaw don’t allow me to feel depressed, because there are many opportunities, smart people, places to go. No depression only inspiration.
