It is treated by the owner as an artistic project outside of the purpose of co-creating various events taking place there. Where to play Board Games in Wroclaw

Playing board games is one of the more popular activities around the world, fortunately this culture is steadily growing in Poland for several of years now, and Wroclaw is no exception. So what to do if You are in the capital of Lower Silesia, and want to spend some time with dice, cards, and meepels? Here is a quick guide to most of the options open for people who want to play some games. Be that individually in the city, at home, or at various board game  in Wroclaw meetings.

There are several options for people that want to spend their time with a board on their table, ranging from pubs and organized meetings to board game rentals if You prefer to play games in home. Note that currently many pubs in the city have a copy of Monopoly, or Scrabble. But if You, dear reader, are interested in some more complicated games I will try to give You some options on where and when to go.

HEX Board Game Café – Dubuois 33/35b

Hex Cafe is hard to find, but it is worth it, You need to pass this gate to reach it

And we are starting with a pub that is focused on board games. Hex is located in a back alley, and can be a little hard to find for the first time, but it is worth the search. When You enter Your eyes are greeted with a fair amount of tables. When You make your way to the bar area You will see several shelves filled with board games.

The choice is huge, so if You don’t have Your collection with You is the ideal place to go.  Drinks wise You can have Your warm drinks like coffee and  tea, colder beverages like water, juice, lemonade or coke are also available. As for something with alcohol there is a good choice of craft beers in addition to normal beer and drinks. As far as snacks go You can count on peanuts, toasts, or hot dogs to name just a few. Although You can find a table walking in from the street I highly recommend reserving one, as this is a very popular place, and there are many special events organized by the owners. Also don’t forget some sort of ID because it could be needed to borrow a game at the bar.

When You reach it there is plenty of room for gaming

Opening Hours:

Monday – Friday: 15:00 – 24:00

Saturday – Sunday: 12:00 – 24:00

The games library is big and is still growing

Cybermachina – Szczytnicka 52

Cybermachina has nice gaming tables

Located near Pasaż Grunwaldzki Cybermachina has some board games at the bar, as well as some consoles with video games on them for people to play. The gaming library is smaller than at Hex, but it has a nice climate. There are also some events organized by the pub itself, like Pub Quiz, board and video games tournaments, and so one. On Tuesdays there is a big board gaming event “Planszowe Koloseum w Cybermachinie”, where people meet to play board games in Wroclaw. The meeting is open to all, and is free of charge. You can bring Your own game, or just show up, and pick something to play from. This is a great time if You are looking for other gamers to play with. The event starts every Tuesday at around 18 o clock. As beverages go there is a good choice of beer, coffee, tea, water, coke, juices, and a whole plethora of thematically named drinks both with alcohol and without it. As with Hex, You can find a table walking in from the street but I recommend reserving one just to make sure.

Opening Hours:

Monday – Wednesday: 14:00 – 1:00

Thursday – Saturday: 14:00 – 4:00

Sunday: 14:00 – 1:00

Cybermachina also has several consoles

PadBar – Kazimierza Wielkiego 1 (Times Building)

Padbar is a nice place for gaming

Another place on the list is PadBar, with console games as main focus, but they have a library of board games in Wroclaw at the bar. Located near the city center it is a fine place to visit. The best time for board gamers to visit is Sunday, when there is a board game meeting in association with Wielosfer, and a board game store Planszak. The library grows massively as well as the amount of board gamers to play with. The event starts at about 18 o clock every Sunday.

Opening Hours:

Monday – Wednesday: 18:00 – 24:00

Thursday: 18:00 – 2:00

Friday – Saturday: 18:0 – 3:00

Sunday: 17:00 – 24:00

Sklep Feniks– Rynek 31 (DH Feniks)

Small store but there are some tables in Feniks

Located in the heart of the city on the fourth floor of Dom Handlowy Feniks this store is a great place for people playing Magic: the Gathering or Pokemon TCG. Tuesday afternoon is dedicated for Pokemon players, Thursday is the day for miniature gamers, and Friday is Magic day. But there are events scheduled usually for every day of the week. The schedule of playing days is created for the whole month in advance, so it is best to follow their Facebook page for up to date schedule.

Opening Hours:

Monday – Friday: 9:00 – 20:00

Saturday: 9:00 – 18:00

Bolter Cafe – Podwale 6

Fancy some miniature games?

Bolter is another board gaming store, but this one is focused mainly on miniature games, and is coupled with a cafe. Thematic days organized by the store are spread through all days of the week. Monday is miniature painting day, as well as free gaming, Tuesdays are for skirmish games, Wednesdays are for X-Wing/Armada space combat, Thursday is Age of Sigmar, Wahrammer 40k, Lords of the Rings and other big miniature games, Friday is Veteran Night, where the store is open to late night hours, and Saturdays and Sundays are tournament and event days. The themes listed are just informational, and if You want to play something else there is no problem as long as there is a free table. There are regular games of Bolt Action, Blood Bowl, Warmachine, Malifaux and several other games at the store as well. Note that Friday nights are very crowded so the best way to get a table is to use their forum (link on their website bolter.pl), and weekend gaming may require an entry fee. For more information and up to date schedule I recommend following them on Facebook, or following their forums.

Opening Hours:

Monday – Thursday: 8:00 – 20:00 (21:00 if games are lasting)

Friday: 8:00 – 24:00 (Veterans Night)

Saturday: 10:00 – 18:00

Sunday: 10:00 – 16:00 (18:00 if there is still an ongoing tournament)

Planszóweczka – Horbaczewskiego 4-6 (DH Astra), Czekoladowa 9 (Aleja Bielany), Kazimierza Wielkiego 19a-21 (Kino Nowe Horyzonty)

Planszoweczka at Aleje Bielany has massive amounts of gaming tables

Last but certainly not least is Planszoweczka, board gaming store spread through Wroclaw in three locations. At every location there is a place to pick up a game from the library and play it on the spot for free. You can bring Your own game and take a free table, there are special events organized by the store, as well as painting lessons and miniature gaming. But the thing that makes Planszoweczka stand out is the rental system. If You fancy to play some games at home You can rent them for 3 days paying a couple of zlotys for it (the prices vary but are usually at most 10% of the games shelf price). With more than 500 titles in the library You have lot of games to choose from ranging from kids and party games, to heavy euro or ameri style titles.

Opening Hours:

DH Astra:

Monday – Saturday: 9:00 – 20:00

Sunday: 10:00 – 16:00 (only working Sundays)

Aleja Bielany:

Monday – Saturday: 10:00 – 21:00

Sunday: 10:00 – 20:00 (only working Sundays)

Kino Nowe Horyzonty:

Monday – Friday: 15:30 – 21:00

Saturday: 12:00 – 21:00

And that’s all for a quick guide to board gaming in Wroclaw, I hope that it will be useful. I encourage to check out websites or Facebook profiles of said places for up to date information about events and meetings.

Wroclaw from the rooftops

Wroclaw from the rooftops

Wroclaw from the rooftops

Best places to see Wroclaw from the rooftops.

First two weeks in Wroclaw made me understand one thing: this city is for life. Comfortable happy life. And for work. Not for your career, but for stable work.  Everything here is so tiny, so calm. When you go to the main square of Wroclaw, it seems like you got into a fairy tale – all the houses look like they’re made of gingerbread.  But have you ever seen Wroclaw from the rooftops? I propose you 3 rooftops to visit, while you’re in Wroclaw.

1. Sky Tower – number 1 for seeing Wroclaw from the rooftops

Sky Tower is the highest building in Poland. It’s 258 m in height, and there’s a viewpoint on the 49th floor. The view is amazing, this place is worth to visit, even if you stay in Wroclaw just for two days.

Location: Powstańców Śląskich street, 95

Ticket: 12-16 zl

Open hours: 8 am to 4 pm

P.S. Don’t worry, they have the fast elevators, so it’ll not take too much time to go up there.

P.S.S. You can have a cup of coffee or tea on the top.

2. Mostek Pokutnic – number 2 in my list, if you want to see Wroclaw from the rooftops.

This place is in the main square of Wroclaw, named Rynek, and I think, it’s a very romantic one. Because you’ll see the city not from the tower, but from the bridge! However, be ready to climb the narrow spiral staircase. And believe me, you’ll not be disappointed.

Location; Rynek

Ticket: 5 zl

Open hours: 9 am to 5 pm

3. Hotel Monopol – my number 3 in the list, where you can see Wroclaw from the rooftops

This hotel is situated in the heart of the city, next to the main square. I’m not telling about its suits, but about its summer terraces, which are surrounded by the Gothic church, with views on the Opera House and the National Forum of Music. Also there’s a bar, where you can drink your morning coffee or evening cocktail.

Location: Heleny Modrzejewskiej street, 2

Ticket: free entrance, but you need to order something

Open hours: 12 pm to 11 pm
