Ecology and pollution of environment is one of the biggest issue on the world right now. Humanity have a huge problem with excesive quantity of rubbish which we are producing. Tones of plastic are swimming in Oceans. Another kinds of animals are dying irretrievably. Most of polish cities also are struggling with this problem, espcially when we are talking about SMOG and air condition. We are destroying our planet day, by day. But there is still a great number of people, who can’t raconcile with this fact, and the inhabitants of Wrocław are also in this group. A trend of being eco and living in harmony with nature is becoming more, and more visible everywhere around the globe. This trend is also great chance for all sort of brands to promote themselves. Check how it looks in Wrocław.
Vozilla – environment-friendly electric cars for rent
Sharing is now a very popular trend. It also applies in ecology. This is known by Vozilla, an electric car rental company operating in Wrocław. Only in the last year Wrocław residents have rented Vozilla cars over 300,000 times, which significantly reduced the number of cars driving on city streets, and thus significantly contributed to the reduction of emissions and exhaust fumes.
Nextbike – take care of your and city’s condition
From March to
October, Wrocław residents take care of their own form, but also
reduce pollution in the city. All thanks to another rental company,
which has been serving the city residents since 2011. Nextbike, an
urban bicycle rental, is an inseparable element of the city today.
The company offers cyclists a few dozen stations and several hundred
bikes throughout the city. This is another example of how companies
can efficiently join to the environmental protection trend, so that
customers will be happy to use their services.
Fitness World – Your ecological gym in Wroclaw
Fitness World fitness center operating in Wrocław meets the
expectations of its clients and shows that it is possible to care for
the environment regardless of the type of activity. The brand is
promoted with posters informing how choosing the right materials and
cleaning agents positively affects ecology. Thanks to the use of
paper produced by Econatural and Fiberpack, they managed to process
over 115,000 beverage cartons, reduce CO2 emissions by over 3000 kg
and save nearly 50 trees.
The green race is just
As you can see, brands are already actively
involved in the trend of ecological life, and customers only
encourage them to use their services. I think that with time more
companies will appear with new ideas. After all, we are all well
aware of how much ecology still needs to be done in Poland.
Almost 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic floats in oceanic waters, which corresponds to 80,000 tons. The area filled with rubbish is three times larger than France. These terrifying data make us think about the ecology and direction in which humanity is heading. They also ensure that people who choose to live in the spirit of zero waste philosophy should be treated with genuine respect.
Zero waste is a lifestyle according to which a person tries to generate as little waste as possible, thus not polluting the environment.
There are five main rules that apply in zero waste:
– Refuse -do not agree to unnecessary pollution, refuse advertising leaflets, disposable packaging, as well as all products produced to the detriment of the environment, generating waste and pollution.
– Reduce – reduce the number of objects, lead a possibly minimalist life, surround yourself only with what you actually use and what you need to live.
– Reuse – do not use disposable solutions. Use reusable packaging, thermos, dishes and even hygienic items. Use again what is already trash at first glance
– Recycle – make sure unnecessary things have been converted into something useful. Sort rubbish and get to the appropriate points, process what you can even at home
– Rot – compost organic waste, obtaining energy or natural fertilizer. Use what, when worn out, can hit the compost.
Followers of the zero-waste philosophy are a big challenge for marketing, however, it offers many interesting possibilities that would certainly benefit ecology. One such proposal could be food from edible or dissolving packs. Another idea is to create a zero waste network where products would be sold without packaging or in reusable packaging. In addition to grocery stores, you could also create drugstores or clothing stores where the goods would not be packed in plastic bags or containers.
In Wrocław, we still rarely see people who come to the store and pour flour into self-sewn linen pouches. Shops that give this opportunity are also rare. Maybe if people had the opportunity to do this kind of shopping, they would be happy to use it. General environmental awareness is also unsatisfactory although it is slowly moving in a better direction. Some time ago, fees for one-off plastic bags were introduced to reduce their consumption. However, we must remember that the generations of children in the 70’s and 80’s were collecting cans and cigarette packages. In the gray PRL times, everything colorful found its supporters. Today the same people are learning ecology and segregation so the path to zero waste is still very long.
Living in the spirit of zero waste is not easy especially before the right habits are established. It is also becoming difficult to find representatives of such professions as a shoemaker or a tailor who can repair shoes or clothing so that there is no need to buy new ones. Slowly, however, the return of these forgotten professions can be noticed, in some Polish cities there arise points where you can repair and renew old footwear. However, these services are expensive. And here is probably the biggest problem of the zero waste movement. This lifestyle is unfortunately expensive. It also requires spending a lot of time, especially when there is limited access to stores where you can buy goods without packaging. Of course, you can look for local farmers and millers, but it is time-consuming and expensive for average people.
With great interest, I will follow the development of this movement. I wonder if it will turn out to be only extravagant fashion, or maybe he will have more and more supporters. Certainly, our planet would benefit if people learned to live according to the zero-waste philosophy.
Worth to check!
BEZ PUDŁA is the first stationary store in Wroclaw supporting the idea of Zero Waste. They sell natural products mostly from local suppliers and make sure that every product purchased from their serves the natural environment and does not generate waste. They pack in containers that customer brings or in ecological packaging. In their assortment we can find both food by weight, as well as natural cosmetics without packaging and everyday articles that will help you live ecologically. BEZ PUDŁA promotes a lifestyle aimed at eliminating waste from our everyday life. Supports a circular economy in which all raw materials are re-used and fully biodegradable, affects human, animal and plant health.
Trends related to the ecological lifestyle came to the Oder. Because of that DIY workshops in Wroclaw are gaining more and more popularity. Many people learn to do different things themselves from scratch instead of buying ready products. Therefore recycling of old items and materials, the selection of natural resources and control over the production process is often an alternative to shopping in large retail chains. If you want to learn it, the workshops will come with help to do it yourself. Under the supervision of trainers you will develop your creativity and create unique items. And finally, the environment will only benefit.
DIY workshops in Wroclaw- suggestions
Beauty and food DIY workshops in Wroclaw
Are you not satisfied with the offer of natural cosmetics in stores? Learn how to do a cream with selected organic ingredients. Moreover, create a product that really adapts to your skin needs. During workshops with natural cosmetics you will do body lotion with avocado oil or lip balm without the addition of paraffin and mineral oils. The classes are carried out in the store “Ładnie Pachnie” in cooperation with an online store with cosmetics raw materials “Zrób sobie krem”.
Are you a gingerbread gourmet? Seems like you can learn about the traditional recipes of baked goods. Workshops organized by a small manufacture of “Piernikarnia Wrocławska” are certainly a good idea. Due to the good quality ingredients like Polish honey, real butter, country flour and aromatic cooking spices the pastries will melt in your mouth. The whole family can participate in the workshop, and children will definitely have fun by cutting gingerbread hearts.
Clothing stores mostly offer clothes made with synthetic fabrics. Furthermore, new collections appear every few weeks. In contrast to the offer of shopping centers, supporters of an ecological lifestyle try to tailor old clothes. Buying fewer good quality items made of natural fabrics is also more and more evident. In this case, tailoring workshops are another noteworthy suggestion. At the tailoring workshop at the Szyciokawiarnia in Wroclaw you can sew a pencil skirt or a shopper bag according to your own design. In addition, in the Szyciokawiarnia you can also spend time not only at the workshops, but whenever you want- with delicious coffee, homemade cake and sewing machine, in the company of other tailoring enthusiasts.
During craft workshops, you will wake up the artist’s soul and create unique home decorations. The Jak Malowana Foundation as part of the course at the Wolna Pracownia offers a wide range of DIY workshops. As a result, anyone interested learn how to make ceramic fridge magnets, wooden caskets decorated with decoupage technique or paint Japanese patterns on fabric. Beside that, you can bring your own products home or give them to your family or friends.
Trend Be Eco and do-it-yourself is more and more popular in Wroclaw. The range of workshops on various topics is constantly enriching and, in fact, everyone can find something for themselves. Next time, when you are looking for an interesting idea for spending free time, try to participate in DIY workshops – you can be surprised how much is possible thanks to your passion and your own work!
Wrocław is a city of shopping centers, but why go to the easy way? I know a better way to shop, demanding more creativity – second hand.
Second hand is a style of being giving new life a dress after grandma releases creativity. The times in which we live are individualism related to the music we listen to or the ideology we proclaim. The clothing store in the “Magnolia Park” or “Wroclaw” gallery gives us ready-made stylizations, clothing sets that limits our creativity. Lumpeks is a fun style, with a small financial outlay. His success is related to the fact that the buyer spends a lot of time to find something that suits his style, is of a specific brand, has the right quality and is not damaged. When a product meets these requirements, it becomes our treasure, which we are happy to boast about friends.
“I remember my anger when I came to one shop with used clothing, where I found polo identical, to the one from the gallery. The worst fact in this situation was that for the shirt I bought at Magnolia Park with the price of 329 zlotys for that which was worn once I paid PLN 15. On such examples of life, you can radically change your habits. “- says Marcin.
The clothing store is a great alternative for people affected by the disease of the 21st century – shopaholism. Each of them has a different promotion for a particular day. I know from experience that “lumpeks” hides many pearls, and Jessica Mercedes herself would be quartered for some vintage handbags. Nowadays, eco, where most people realize that we are throwing away a lot of things, many of them give them a new life. Not only is it much cheaper, but it also does not create a large garbage dumb from our world.
Livia Firth speaks for one of the website, saying that the clothing industry has become one of the largest sources of waste because one consumes the most. It became the cause of dramatic working conditions of adults and, what is worse, children, as well as the suffering of animals. This fact is increased by the poverty of the Third World countries in which workers are exploited, secondly animal harm is another reason and an equally important pollution of the environment, which is constantly changing by the constant interference of people. Consumer awareness is growing in Poland, paving the way for ecological clothing that respects the Fair Trade environment. This awareness is still low, because clothes made of renewable materials are much more expensive. A good alternative for those who can not afford eco clothing is second hand.
Cheap and chic
Most people do not know that for 15 zlotys you can get a polo from Ralph Lauren or a dress from Michael Kors for 25 zlotys. I will lead you after the best second hands in Wroclaw.
World-famous style stylists use things from vintage shops. The stars themselves openly admit to using second hands:
Julia Roberts buys used baby clothes
Before he became a star, Kurt Cobain paved his unique style of cloththrough second-hand things.
Wroclaw is a city that undoubtedly develops in the flashlight! A city which is full of smiling people who draw energy from it and are happy to be its inhabitants. A city that attracts many foreigners. The proof of this is receiving many awards, among others, the last, prestigious award European Best Destination 2018! Have you ever wondered why Wroclaw is such a very desirable city? Let’s check it!
Is Wroclaw an example of smart city?
Natalia Hatalska from the Institute of Forecasting Trends Infuture created the Trend Map 2018 . One of these trends was to be a sustainable city. Let’s analyze exactly if Wroclaw meets the requirements of being a smart city! Perhaps this is the reason why we live here so well. The essence of the smart city best describes the words of Natalia Hatalska: “The idea of an intelligent city can not consist solely on implementing solutions in the area of new technologies. These issues are important, but an intelligent city can not be built without considering the needs of its inhabitants. “
The first point to analyze is the satisfaction of the residents and checking if their needs are met. When you wan to be happy, all you is to have a good job. And also a stable financial situation. According to research carried out by the Michael Page, in the second quarter of 2018, 67 percent of Lower Silesians positively assess their current professional situation and the domestic labor market. In the previous quarter such opinion was expressed by 65.4 percent of the surveyed inhabitants of the region. The Lower Silesians are also the most satisfied with their salaries in the country. Undoubtedly, from these studies we can read that Wroclaw in economic terms does not stand out from other Polish cities. Wroclaw also provides stable situations in the local labor market, which undoubtedly testifies to its being a balanced city.
This is another point without the city can not bear the title of sustainable. The authorities of Wroclaw are constantly striving to modernize the city’s infrastructure. They want to provide the best quality of services to the residents of Wroclaw. The last spectacular example of such a change was the replacement of devices for the purchase of tickets in transport. And introduction of the possibility to save the purchased ticket on a payment card. The whole investment was introduced in Wroclaw as one of the first investments of this type in Europe. This example shows that the authorities of Wroclaw undoubtedly go with the times. They are infidelity not afraid about modern technologies.
More than technology.
Technology is important but you can not also forget about culture and art. City has to fulfill the spiritual needs of residents. Wroclaw as a student city has a rich offer of cultural events that attract people not only from all over Poland, but also from all over Europe. The fact that Wroclaw became the European Capital of Culture shows that the city provides all cultural needs.
All of the mentioned requirements show us that Wroclaw undoubtedly is being a sustainable city. Requirements, reports, statistics is one thing. However, the most important is that going to the street of this beautiful city you can meet smiling, kind people. They are the best example that the city flourishes and develops all needs. Let it be as long and as good as possible in our beautiful city!
The city is nice but hey! It is summer, time for a trip.
If You are searching for a little rest, nature, mountains, art and music- Sokołowsko might be great place for You. It is not that far from Wrocław. You only need two days off, backpack and a train ticket. Oh, and friends to share great moments with.
HISTORY OF SOKOŁOWSKO
Until the mid-nineteenth century Goerbersdorf- a small mountain village did not differ in any way from other villages belonging to the Hochbergs. In 1845, countess von Colomb came here for a vacation. She was enchanted by the landscape and convinced by the uniqueness of the place so she persuaded her brother-in-law Dr Hermann Brehmer
to create a health resort there. In 1945, in honor of the count’s friendship with Professor Alfred Sokołowski, the village received a new name – Sokołowsko.
In 1855 Sokołowsko became a place of the world’s first specialist tuberculosis sanatorium. After World War II, the spa was reclassified from the tuberculosis profile to the treatment profile for respiratory diseases. In the following years, attempts were made to create a Provincial Winter Sports Center. Unfortunatelly it turned out to be a costly undertaking and the implementation has never been completed.
In October 2005, the inhabitants of Sokołowsko heard an explosion,
a moment later the building was consumed by a fire. The fire burned the whole roof of the sanatorium building. The wooden elements disappeared, the vaults collapsed, the wall and ceiling paintings were burned.
A new, surprising chapter in the history of Sokołowsko was the purchase of the object by the Contemporary Art Foundation, which main goal was to rebuild the burned Sanatorium of Dr. Brehmer and create the International Laboratory of Culture there.
NEW LIFE OF SOKOŁOWSKO WITH “IN SITU” FOUNDATION
In Situ Foundation, which means “in place” was founded in 2004 in Podkowa Leśna by artists Bożenna Biskupska and Zygmunt Rytka. “In situ is an activity in a place that, no matter where it is located, can become an art space. In Situ initiates the possibility of creation of infinite permutations, number of solutions and searches, creates
a field and the conditions for action and the interpenetration of time, space, people and various areas, and above all, create zones for a free creative and scientific research process.”- tells Bożenna BiskupskaIn 2012, the headquarters from Warsaw were moved to Sokołowsko. Along with the new president, Zuzanna Fogtt, new goals have been defined: “Creating space for the implementation of international artistic projects, diverse and interdisciplinary creative activities, research, meetings, confronting views, exchanges and experiences, as well as popularizing innovative artistic attitudes.”
ACTIVITIES, ART, FESTIVALS
The cyclical activities of the In Situ foundation include: Ephesus Art Festival Konteksty/The Contexts, Hommage à Kieślowski, Sanatorium Dźwięku/ Sound Sanatorium.
In Sokołowsko, postmodern chaos arose from a mixture of Neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau buildings, and the fauna and flora of the mountain landscapes proved to be the perfect basis for the experimental music festival – Sanatorium Dźwięku – a festival created by Zuzanna Fogtt and Gerard Lebik. The festival presents a wide spectrum of musical forms of the XX / XXI century – concerts, realizations from the border of sound art, interdisciplinary performance. The festival takes place in Health Kinoteatre in Sokołowiec, in the Multimedia Hall, Spa Park, but also within the ruins of the nineteenth-century sanatorium. Every year, the festival attracts hundreds of music lovers from around the world. The fifth edition of the festival did not receive funding from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, therefore the foundation conducts a fundraising campaign from voluntary donors, so that this year the patients could come to the music session to the Sanatorium Dźwięku.
HOMMAGE A KIEŚLOWSKI
Three-day celebration for the greatest cinema enthusiasts, especially Kieślowski’s films, but also those “after Kieślowski”, ie debutants, students of film schools, directors and directors who created after 2000. Away from the urban momentum Sokołowsko becomes a meeting place for film creators and recipients, it gives the opportunity to meet famous actors, directors and interact with them in the extraordinary beauty of landscapes “For three festival days, we propose discussions, introductions to films referring to the spirit of the DKF and promoting cinema as a place to broaden the horizons of thought, putting into question our own, often unfair or outdated opinions.”. The festival program is divided into three parts. Documentary cinema “Without fiction”, a European feature film “Re: Interpretations” and Kieślowski’s films, meaning “Hommage and Kieślowski.” Film screenings are intertwined with a discussion between film scientists, philosophers, filmmakers and the audience. Kieślowski said: “Live and look carefully!”
The festival realizes this idea.
Festival of Ephemeral Art. Performance art festival. With this project, the In Situ foundation proves once again that art can be at the fingertips of every human being. Periodically the performers of the performance and its recipients gather in Sokołowsko. They are looking for the answer to the question: “Is art a foreign body in society or maybe its integral element? ” Apart from the world-famous artists during the Konteksty Festival, there will also be a place for the” Open Platform “, a section enabling young artists to present their realizations.

Car Hire Apps
Online Wroclaw rental services for cars are represented by 2 market leaders:
The fleet of Traficar consists of 150 Clio Renault cars. Users pay for each kilometer driven and for each started minute of use. Cars are waiting in the streets and at some Orlen stations. To become a user, you need to register in the system by providing your personal data, credit card information, and driving license scan. The car can be hired through the application. The user checks whether the vehicles are available in the given area at the moment, chooses the nearest one, and reserves it for 15 minutes. When you reach the car, you scan the QR code from the windshield. The key card is waiting inside. The cost of travel is PLN 0.80 for each kilometer plus PLN 0.50 for every minute of use. A minute of parking costs 0.10 zl.
Users have 200 ELECRTIC cars available, including 190 Nissan Leaf and 10 VAN cars. This car hire service is quite similar to the previous one and operates on similar terms as Traficar. You only pay for 1 minute of drive, which is 1 zl. At the same time, a minute of a stop would cost you 10 groszy. For example, to reach Aquapark Wroclaw from the city center, you should prepare about 10 zl. Vozilla cars can be used outside Wroclaw but should be returned within the city limits, otherwise, the user pays an additional fee.
In western Europe the number of cars has increased by 130% in the last 40 years. 100% increase took place in the 20 years between 1980 and 2000. Now the rate of increase is lower, sign that saturation is nearing, but trips are becoming longer and more frequent.
In developing economies, the rate of increase of the number of cars is often close to 10% per annum, which means a doubling every 7–8 years. It seems that we are witnessing a collective infatuation for cars that borders with addiction. Indeed, they are the most convenient (for the user) means of transportation ever devised, but the social cost associated is huge.
Every car need to be parked at either side of their trip. European cities are struggling to fulfill this need – and here is a field for companies to improve this situation.
So here we have initiatives like Vozilla in Wrocław which is offering short term (by minutes) rental of electric cars (over 200 cars in Wroclaw) which can be parked in special areas in city centre (green envelope mark). The charge is 1PLN per minute of the rental service.
The first thing the customer has to do is download a special app and register in the service. The app is necessary for you to find the closest vehicle and book it with your smartphone. Then you may access the car where the previous user or the operator have left it. The rental service is provided across the entire administrative area of Wrocław. Users are allowed to leave Wrocław. However, to return the car you are also obliged to return to the city. You can leave your car at any generally accessible car park.
Additionally, Vozilla’s cars are similar to cabs in that they are authorized to access bus lanes and zones with restricted access for combustion engine vehicles. Vozilla cars are authorised to use the following bus lanes: ul Reymonta/Pomorska, Podwale, Trzebnicka, Piłsudskiego, pl Teatralny, św Jadwigi, Traugutta, Jedności Narodowej, Szewska, Robotnicza.
According to statistics, about 9 million tons of food are wasted annually in Poland. The consumers themselves throw an average of 2 tons, which gives about 50 kilograms per person; 20-30% of food products purchased is thrown to the rubbish bin. There is a cause of this behaviour – improper consumer habits, when it comes to shopping and planning, carrying food, storing it and sharing – social fridges.
What can you do with this?
The question is what we, as conscious consumers, can do on our own to help improve the situation:
we can plan our shopping by creating list in advance,
choose products without packaging,
we could put bought products to eco bag,
we should remember to store them properly as they won’t go off,
also use the leftovers for compost or recycle them properly
Social fridges = no food waste
There is another complete approach, solution called foodsharing. This idea was born in Germany in 2012. It went to different European countries also to Wrocław. The initiative of the group “TakePom.pl” spread concept of social fridge. Members of this group want to distribute ready-to-use social refrigerators to people interested in spreading the idea of foodsharing in Wroclaw.
How to become part of this movement?
To become part of this very useful and needed trend you should fill in certain requirements to use the social fridges properly. There is also a big concern how you, as a part of this action, define food that could be shared. Social fridges are not a place for leftovers, something that you want to get rid of. The food should not be wasted but as it is shared with others, should have certain level of quality. You ca also set up social fridge in your area using tips from this page.
Nadodrze (in the yard at Rydygiera 25),
at the church. Teresa from Baby Jesus in Osobowice.
Food sharing is one of the answers for the question “What to do to avoid a huge waste of food?” Tons of food goes to the trash!
Data shows that in Poland about 9 million tons of food is going to waste annually . The value of this food is probably about PLN 50 for each Pole every month. That’s why we should try food sharing. Almost 35% of the food go for disposal.
Sharing is a new trend.
Economics based on sharing is a relatively new trend in the economy and society. It involves the direct exchange of goods and services between consumers who mainly communicate via special websites or social media. With the help of this term, the entire spectrum of online businesses have the potential to revolutionize the global market for the exchange of goods and services. Also it can be both non-profit and profitable. However is about exchanging between one man and another. In this Expats in Wroclaw article. I want to focused on NON PROFIT form.
How does it starts? The first Food Sharing point was opened in May 2016 in Warsaw. Therefore Torun, Cracow, Wroclaw and Poznan followed the idea. Other cities are following them consequently. Social refrigerators in Wroclaw are mostly grow due to the idea of the group WeźPomóż.pl, which promotes the idea of sharing food in Lower Silesia. Anyone who wants can bring food to the fridge. Food is available in the fridge for those in need. Food sharing points are for everyone – the material status of people who visit it is not checked here. The whole system finally works freely.
What can you put in a shared fridge? The basic rule: bring what you would eat by yourself. Home products such as cake or soup must be packed in disposable, sealed containers with the exact date of preparation and description on packaging. Furthermore you can put dry products on special shelf.
What can you not bring?
Products that contain raw meat, raw eggs, unpainted milk products (unless they are vacuum-packed and have a valid shelf-life) probably can not be accepted; open canned food or jars with preserves; products that have exceeded the shelf-life date; similarly products with signs of breakage. The rules for products are posted on the front door of the refrigerator too.
Volunteers, companies and food rescuers
All sharing food points function because of volunteers. They are usually young people who, using social media – mainly Facebook – are trying to buy refrigerators, shelves, social signs and also make sure that the place is working properly. In addition volunteers check in this points cleanliness standards, wash it, if there’s a need, bring food or throw out expired products.
Where are the Refrigerators in Wroclaw? Seems like we have seven of them in Wroclaw!

In addition, this type of idea strengthens mutual trust, fills a need for convenience and it gives meaning of belonging to community. It seems like it has positive impact on the environment.
