HISTORY OF SOKOŁOWSKO
Until the mid-nineteenth century Goerbersdorf- a small mountain village did not differ in any way from other villages belonging to the Hochbergs. In 1845, countess von Colomb came here for a vacation. She was enchanted by the landscape and convinced by the uniqueness of the place so she persuaded her brother-in-law Dr Hermann Brehmer
to create a health resort there. In 1945, in honor of the count’s friendship with Professor Alfred Sokołowski, the village received a new name – Sokołowsko.
In 1855 Sokołowsko became a place of the world’s first specialist tuberculosis sanatorium. After World War II, the spa was reclassified from the tuberculosis profile to the treatment profile for respiratory diseases. In the following years, attempts were made to create a Provincial Winter Sports Center. Unfortunatelly it turned out to be a costly undertaking and the implementation has never been completed.
In October 2005, the inhabitants of Sokołowsko heard an explosion,
a moment later the building was consumed by a fire. The fire burned the whole roof of the sanatorium building. The wooden elements disappeared, the vaults collapsed, the wall and ceiling paintings were burned.
A new, surprising chapter in the history of Sokołowsko was the purchase of the object by the Contemporary Art Foundation, which main goal was to rebuild the burned Sanatorium of Dr. Brehmer and create the International Laboratory of Culture there.
NEW LIFE OF SOKOŁOWSKO WITH “IN SITU” FOUNDATION
In Situ Foundation, which means “in place” was founded in 2004 in Podkowa Leśna by artists Bożenna Biskupska and Zygmunt Rytka. “In situ is an activity in a place that, no matter where it is located, can become an art space. In Situ initiates the possibility of creation of infinite permutations, number of solutions and searches, creates
a field and the conditions for action and the interpenetration of time, space, people and various areas, and above all, create zones for a free creative and scientific research process.”- tells Bożenna BiskupskaIn 2012, the headquarters from Warsaw were moved to Sokołowsko. Along with the new president, Zuzanna Fogtt, new goals have been defined: “Creating space for the implementation of international artistic projects, diverse and interdisciplinary creative activities, research, meetings, confronting views, exchanges and experiences, as well as popularizing innovative artistic attitudes.”
ACTIVITIES, ART, FESTIVALS
The cyclical activities of the In Situ foundation include: Ephesus Art Festival Konteksty/The Contexts, Hommage à Kieślowski, Sanatorium Dźwięku/ Sound Sanatorium.
In Sokołowsko, postmodern chaos arose from a mixture of Neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau buildings, and the fauna and flora of the mountain landscapes proved to be the perfect basis for the experimental music festival – Sanatorium Dźwięku – a festival created by Zuzanna Fogtt and Gerard Lebik. The festival presents a wide spectrum of musical forms of the XX / XXI century – concerts, realizations from the border of sound art, interdisciplinary performance. The festival takes place in Health Kinoteatre in Sokołowiec, in the Multimedia Hall, Spa Park, but also within the ruins of the nineteenth-century sanatorium. Every year, the festival attracts hundreds of music lovers from around the world. The fifth edition of the festival did not receive funding from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, therefore the foundation conducts a fundraising campaign from voluntary donors, so that this year the patients could come to the music session to the Sanatorium Dźwięku.
HOMMAGE A KIEŚLOWSKI
Three-day celebration for the greatest cinema enthusiasts, especially Kieślowski’s films, but also those “after Kieślowski”, ie debutants, students of film schools, directors and directors who created after 2000. Away from the urban momentum Sokołowsko becomes a meeting place for film creators and recipients, it gives the opportunity to meet famous actors, directors and interact with them in the extraordinary beauty of landscapes “For three festival days, we propose discussions, introductions to films referring to the spirit of the DKF and promoting cinema as a place to broaden the horizons of thought, putting into question our own, often unfair or outdated opinions.”. The festival program is divided into three parts. Documentary cinema “Without fiction”, a European feature film “Re: Interpretations” and Kieślowski’s films, meaning “Hommage and Kieślowski.” Film screenings are intertwined with a discussion between film scientists, philosophers, filmmakers and the audience. Kieślowski said: “Live and look carefully!”
The festival realizes this idea.
Festival of Ephemeral Art. Performance art festival. With this project, the In Situ foundation proves once again that art can be at the fingertips of every human being. Periodically the performers of the performance and its recipients gather in Sokołowsko. They are looking for the answer to the question: “Is art a foreign body in society or maybe its integral element? ” Apart from the world-famous artists during the Konteksty Festival, there will also be a place for the” Open Platform “, a section enabling young artists to present their realizations.
